5 Ways To Beat the Heat During a Summer Move | Winter Moving & Storage

Summer is the best time of the year to organize a move, either for your home or business. The majority of people schedule their relocation for the summer. This is especially advantageous when you have school-age children. Moving in the summer makes sure that you don’t disrupt their learning schedule. The summer heat can be a challenge especially because moving involves physical activities that include much heavy lifting. To beat the heat in the summer as you move you need to know what to consider while packing and how to go about your activities. The following moving tips will get you through a hectic move:

1. Start Early and Dress Appropriately

During the summer, it gets hotter and hotter as you move through the day. Make sure you start moving early so that the heat does not catch you in the middle of activities. Usually, summer days are hottest between 11 AM and 3 PM, doing the bulk of the work in the morning leaves you with less strenuous work to do for the rest of the day. You should also remember to dress appropriately because of the elevated temperatures. Loose-fitting cotton clothes that are lightweight are the best because they allow the air to move through more easily. Recommended colors are white and any other neutral color. Remember to have sunglasses and a hat to protect your head and eyes from direct sunlight.

2. Drink Plenty Water 

Because of the heat, you will need to drink water regularly to replenish what you lose through sweating. Drinking plenty of water leaves you hydrated and keeps your body fluids up. Cold water is preferable as it cools you off as well; so, have a cooler nearby stocked with bottles filled with clean drinkable water.

3. Look Out for Symptoms of Overheating

Even when you keep yourself hydrated by drinking enough water, and you observe other moving tips, you might experience overheating. Symptoms include:

  • Elevated body temperature
  • A headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Seizures
  • General confusion
  • Weakness and fainting
  • Nausea and dizziness

When you experience any of these symptoms, go to an air-conditioned space and lie down to avoid passing out. Cool yourself off by taking a shower or dabbing yourself with a wet towel. Be sure to drink water as well to offset dehydration.

4. Take Care of Your Property

When you are packing your belongings, make sure to take note of anything that might be damaged by the heat. Place them in a labeled box and keep them in an air-conditioned area, so they don’t get affected by the heat. In case you have foods that may melt or go bad due to elevated temperatures, keep them out of extreme heat. Electronics should also be handled with care lest they get damaged.  In case you are moving in trips, prioritize everything that does not do well under extreme heat. Moving tips will only be useful if you move your things without damage.

5. Prep Your Work

What’s the point of using the above moving tips if you don’t plan for the move? Avoid putting things off until the last minute as this will lead you to rush through the whole process and mess up. Make sure you are ready before the movers arrive. Take mental breaks so that you don’t overwork yourself as this may lead you to forget one thing or another. Carefully plan your moving process.
