Five Best Tips For A Stress-Free Move | Winter Moving & Storage

Moving is stressful. That said, there are several things you can do to alleviate the headaches that come along with clearing out one residence and taking everything you own somewhere else. Here are our five best tips for a stress-free move:

1. Schedule a Donation Pick-Up

Almost everyone who moves questions the amount of “stuff” they own. Do you cart it with you to the next house or donate it before the move?

Well, donating it is an added stress — if you have to cart everything there.

Before your move, schedule a donation pickup with a local charity. As you pack your belongings, make sure to set aside all the items you don’t want to take with you on the move. Then, when the day comes, you’ll have all the donations ready to go and a couple of people to help you load them!

2. Prepare Plenty of Markers and Labels

A large part of the stress of moving is finding everything you packed!

You can find your things much easier if they’re marked and labeled. But too many moving families fail to buy extra supplies to make sure everything is labeled correctly.

Before you begin packing, buy an extra pack of permanent markers and labels, so everyone packing has what they need to mark down the contents of each box accurately.

3. Research Packing “Hacks”

Here are a few of our favorite packing hacks we’ve found online::

  • Color-code labels (red for the kitchen, blue for the living room, etc.)
  • Make sure to have a doorstop! Doors keep closing while you’re moving
  • Leave clothes in the dresser drawers to save time and space

But don’t over-research here. There are 1000’s of tips and tricks. Read up, write down the ones you like, and get to work.

4. Track Your Move

If you’re hiring professional movers for a long-distance relocation, it can be worrisome. You may feel like your entire life is packed onto a semi for hundreds (or even thousands) of miles.

You can place a fully charged tablet or smartphone inside and use apps to track where your belongings are!

Note: Professional movers may even send you updates automatically, taking care of this tip for you.

5. Pack Your Bags (First!)

You should pack a bag with everything you’ll need to get along without the bulk of your belongings.

Things like:

  • Clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Games
  • Charging cables
  • Etc.

Making sure you can survive should things be delayed in arriving will help alleviate a ton of stress.

Bonus Tip: Also, be sure to know which items your professional movers won’t carry. There are some things moving companies either can’t or usually don’t move.
