Packing for a Move | Moving Company Near Me

Are you gearing up for a move? It’s an exciting time and yet it is also a stressful time. With so much on your plate you might not know what to do in order to gear up for the big move. Well, our team here at Winter Moving & Storage is here to help. While we can help you with loading up your truck, driving it, aid you with storage, and just about anything else you might want or need,  you will want to handle much of the packing. To assist you with this, here are our best tips, tricks, and suggestions for packing for a move.

Start Packing Early

The last thing you want to do is sit on your hands until the last minute. Last minute packing will result in a massive headache when you try to unpack. It also will result in more damage to your items as you will not spend as much time securing what you own.

Instead, you need to start packing early on. Packing a box or two per day, even if your six months out, will help cut down on what you need to pack. Ideally you’ll have everything packed going into your final week. This way, you can focus on other tasks that need to be taken care of.

Label Every Box

Don’t just place items in boxes. It only takes a few extra moments to label what’s in the boxes once you’re done and taped up. We like to clearly identify individual boxes and the rooms they go to. You can use some kind of colorful sticker for this, or you can even use different colored packing tape. This way, you instantly know what box goes to the kitchen or what box goes to the kid’s room. There’s no reading and no guessing.

Split Up the Heavy Stuff

It’s amazing what becomes heavy. Have you ever tried to lift a box full of paper or books? It’s one of the heaviest boxes you’ll have. Don’t do this. Instead, try to mix and match heavy items with light items. For example, instead of one box of towels and one box of books, combine them. It will make things easier, you won’t require more boxes, and there’s no risk of the bottom of your box falling out because the boxes are too heavy.

Ask For Help

Now is the perfect time to call in those favors people have promised you for so long. Even a little help with packing can go a long way. It’s also a good time to catch up with friends or family (especially if you’re moving away). And even if they are not able to help you pack, perhaps they are able to watch your children or your pet while you are packing. This will clear them out of the way and make it a bit easier to unpack items and to move them about (you don’t need the cat running under your feet while moving items down the stairs).
