Your fridge, oven, microwave: These are valuable, expensive appliances to move to your next home. You need to make sure your appliances are protected during the move. The last thing you want is to open the back of your moving truck and find appliances have toppled over, glass screens have been busted, and LED touchscreens are damaged beyond repair. Avoiding these moving issues needs to be a top priority.
You just need to know the ins and outs of packing kitchen appliances. To help, here are 4 packing pointers we have at Winter Moving & Storage:
1. Before Moving: Clean Your Appliance
One of our kitchen packing pointers is to thoroughly clean the appliance. You want to get into the fridge and the oven; ensure all the gunk is gone. It needs to look good-as-new when unpacking. This way it not only feels fresh once in the new location, but it will also reduce any funky smells inside the truck.
The inside of a truck captures heat from the outside. If there is a lingering trace of food in the fridge it will permeate through the truck and make everything else – furniture, bedding, clothes – stink.
2. Power Cord
This is where a lot of people slip up. The problem here is the cord is made up of metal prongs, which can easily scratch the appliance or anything else touching it.
Wrap the power cord with packing paper. You can place the prongs into a small padded bag too. The idea here is to prevent the prongs from scratching anything else.
3. Secure Appliance Doors
You’ll want to secure the doors or anything that opens on the appliance. With the oven, you may be able to simply activate the oven lock. With a fridge, you’ll want to secure the doors shut. While the doors usually don’t fly open, it’s just best to tape/rope the doors just in case.
4. Bubble Wrap Glass and Tech
Appliances nowadays have more glass and technology elements. If you spent the extra money on LED touchscreens or a smart TV built into your fridge, you need to protect it. If this part is damaged it probably won’t prevent the fridge from running, but wouldn’t you rather have everything in working order? Place bubble wrap over any glass or breakable tech on the appliance.
