Our Top 5 Packing Tips for a Smooth Move | Winter Moving & Storage

If you dread moving, you’re not alone. Most people detest the moving process and rely on experts to do the job for them. You can rely on professional movers for much of the work, but you can also do some things to make your transition to your new digs go that much smoother.

Here’s a look at some helpful packing pointers to make your move as easy as possible:

1. Tape boxes properly

In order for your possessions to be kept secure in their boxes, those boxes must be adequately sealed. You need the proper packing tape to keep your boxes closed and their contents securely positioned throughout the entirety of the move. Read some reviews or ask around before committing to a particular packing tape. Some packing tape allows box tops to open while others will keep the lids firmly closed throughout the handling and shipping stages. Tape the top and bottom of every box. Wrap the tape around the sides of the box for extra reinforcement. It’s also important to tape the box edges to secure those pressure points.

2. Use Boxes That Are the Right Size

Heavy possessions such as books should be put in small boxes. Lighter items like pillows and sheets should be placed in large boxes. The logic behind packing in such a manner is that it will prove difficult for your moving crew to lift large boxes that contain heavy items. Such hefty boxes make the challenge of moving that much harder. Furthermore, these uber-heavy boxes are more likely to break.

3. Properly Position Items Within Moving Boxes

This is one of the more important packing pointers. Item placement in boxes matters a great deal. Don’t haphazardly place your possessions in boxes, assuming any combination of items in particular boxes will suffice. The heaviest items should be placed at the bottom of boxes so they don’t crush lighter items. Put those light items at the top of the box on top of the heavy ones. There should be no empty spaces in moving boxes. Box gaps should be filled with items ranging from towels to packing paper and clothing. This way, the box won’t be unbalanced or feel loose when the moving men transport it.

4. Label Every Single Box

One of the most common packing mistakes is failing to label each moving box. Every box should be labeled with the name of the room it will be placed in. Furthermore, its contents should be described. This way, you, your family and your movers will understand where each box belongs in your new house or apartment. It also helps to number the boxes. Some people also maintain an inventory of packed items to keep track of what has been packed. This will also make it that much easier to ensure you have everything necessary when unpacking.

5. Pay Special Attention to Fragile Items

Place packing paper around all dishes. Wrap them in bundles of five with additional paper. Dishes shouldn’t be packed flat in the box. Rather, they should be positioned on their sides. Use ample paper to serve as padding below and above your breakables. You can conserve space by placing cups within bowls. Place some paper in between these dishes, and bundle them in groups.
